The statement noted that ethnic and religious minorities and Afghan citizens are at greater risk of execution than other groups, and that a significant proportion of this year’s executions have been carried out against these communities.

According to Amnesty International, more than 1,000 prisoners have been executed in Iran since the beginning of 2025, this is the highest number in 35 years.

“The Islamic Republic’s authorities use the death penalty as a tool to intimidate and silence dissent,” said Hussein Baoumi, the organization’s deputy regional director for the Middle East and North Africa.

The human rights organization noted that the majority of death sentences were related to drug offenses, and that in many cases the trials lacked minimum fair trial standards and sentences were handed down based on coerced confessions.

It should be noted that 1,152 prisoners have been executed in Iran since the beginning of 2025. 32 of them are women.
