Isfahan may experience a drinking water shortage within 45 days.

This was stated by Mohammad Nursalehi, the head of the Isfahan City Council, in an interview with the Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA).

He said that the water level in the Zayandehrud Dam, one of the main water sources in the country, has dropped to a critical level.

“If the current situation continues, even the drinking water consumption of citizens will be at risk for the next 45 days,” he said.

According to Nursalehi, the dam is releasing several times more water than it receives.

This is because a large part of the water is diverted to other directions through pipes that have been expanded, both legally and illegally.

He warned that more than five million people in Isfahan, Yazd, Chaharmahal, Bakhtiari and Qom provinces depend on the Zayandehrud for drinking, agricultural and industrial water consumption.
