The Iranian Revolutionary Court has sentenced civil activist Bahnam Vaziriniya to 18 years in prison

Bahnam Vaziriniya, a Qashqai Turk who has been in prison since June, sentenced to 18 years in prison by the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

It was reported that the trial of Behnam Vaziriniya ended in just 1 minute and he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

He was charged with “gathering and secretly collaborating against national security”, “insulting the leadership”, “membership of the illegal Gayi party”, “propaganda against the regime” and “supporting the Israeli regime”.

Sources close to Vaziriniya’s family say that no bail was accepted for his temporary release and he is currently being held in Evin prison. Behnam Vaziriniya plans to appeal this sentence within the legal period.

He was arrested in Tehran on June 20 and has not been informed of his condition to his family or lawyer for more than two months.

One of Banam's close friends said of his arrest, "Banam was arrested solely for defending the cultural identity of the Qashqai people and demanding their linguistic and cultural rights."
