Environmental Problem in East Azerbaijan – Water Sources Polluted

Residents of Anjird and Zandabad villages in the Ahar district of East Azerbaijan province have once again expressed concern about a serious environmental problem in their area.

According to social media reports, villagers say that the Anjird copper mine has been destroying agricultural land and polluting water sources in the region.

They also claim that pasture lands are being illegally seized, and are demanding that the authorities determine the mine’s boundaries and provide compensation for the damage inflicted on the local community.

Environmental activists highlight that toxic wastewater from the mine’s lagoons is seeping into both surface and groundwater, threatening farmland, livestock, and the health of residents.

Despite official decisions and measures taken by authorities to address the problem, locals say these steps have not been effectively implemented, and the issue remains unresolved.
