At the suggestion and initiative of the History Committee of the Urmu (Urmiyya) City Council, one of the city's streets has been named after the famous poet, writer, and women's rights activist Maryam Jahangiri.
The immortalization of the name of this cultural figure, who has not been sufficiently recognized for many years despite her literary and social position, is considered an important step in terms of the city's cultural memory.
Maryam Jahangiri was born on 1 July 1917 in Urmu, during the difficult and tragic days of the region - the "Jiloluq" events. She grew up in one of the well-known and influential families of Urmu. Her father, Huseyn Khan Jahangiri, is one of the personalities who went down in history as the famous beylerbey of Urmu and the first mayor of the city. Growing up in such a family environment, Maryam Khanum showed interest in literature and art from an early age and was formed in a rich cultural environment.
Maryam Jahangiri was one of the intellectuals who spoke out boldly in a time when it was difficult for women to appear on the public stage in South Azerbaijan in the first half of the 20th century. She wrote poems in both Azerbaijani Turkish and Persian, and actively participated in literary gatherings. The poetess was not content with poetry alone, but also worked on opera texts and stage plays. Women's freedom, justice, national identity, and moral values were the main themes in her work. Maryam Jahangiri's poems are distinguished not only by their lyricism, but also by their social sensitivity. Researchers consider her to be one of the important figures of the early women's intellectual movement in South Azerbaijan. Her poems were published after her death and made available to literature lovers.
