UAE intensifies criticism of Iran over Hormuz closure

The head of a leading UAE oil company on Thursday stepped up criticism of Iran over the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, saying that turning such a crucial waterway into a tool of pressure is unacceptable in any form.

Sultan al-Jaber, CEO of the state-owned Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), wrote online that around 230 oil-laden vessels are currently waiting to pass through the strait, which he said is effectively being restricted by Iran.

He stressed that these ships—and all others—should be allowed to transit the route freely and without conditions. “No nation has the legitimate authority to decide who can pass or under what terms,” he said.

Al-Jaber added that Iran’s actions and statements indicate that passage depends on permission, conditions, and political leverage. “That is not freedom of navigation,” he said. “It is coercion.”
