UK’s Starmer calls ceasefire fragile, stresses importance of Hormuz reopening

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said the ceasefire in the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran remains fragile, adding that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is essential to reinforcing it.

Speaking on Friday as he concluded a three-day visit to the Gulf in Qatar, Starmer said regional leaders were clear that commercial shipping through the waterway should not face any fees or restrictions. He noted that Iran’s effective closure of the strait must be reversed to ensure free passage.

Starmer also said he told U.S. President Donald Trump during a phone call on Thursday that any resolution to the conflict must include Iran’s Gulf neighbors, who, he said, hold strong views on the issue of Hormuz.

He added that the UK is working with other countries on military planning to help secure the strait if the ceasefire develops into a more lasting peace agreement.
