Public transport crisis in Iran: 30,000 buses lacking

Iran is facing a severe public transport crisis, with a major shortage of buses and an aging taxi fleet, officials say.

Currently, around 320,000 taxis operate nationwide, but about 200,000 of them are over 25 years old and no longer considered roadworthy. This was stated by Masoud Haqlotfi, head of the Union of Urban Transport Management Organizations.

“Even if 10,000 taxis are repaired each year, the process would take more than 20 years,” he said.

Haqlotfi also noted that the shortage of city buses has reached a critical level.

“At present, there are only 12,000 to 13,000 urban buses in operation, while the actual need exceeds 45,000, leaving a deficit of around 30,000,” he added.
