UN: At least 21 executed, over 4,000 detained in Iran since start of war

At least 21 people have been put to death and more than 4,000 others detained in Iran since the war began two months ago, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said on Wednesday.

According to Türk, those executed include individuals connected to the January 2026 protests, suspected members of opposition groups, and people accused of espionage. Many others have been held on charges related to national security.

“I am deeply alarmed that the rights of the Iranian people continue to be eroded,” Türk said, calling on authorities to stop executions and free those who have been arbitrarily detained.

He added that during wartime, risks to human rights rise sharply, stressing that basic protections such as the right to a fair trial must be upheld at all times.
