According to Hojjat Jabbbari, director of the West Azerbaijan Environmental Protection Department, rainfall has improved the condition of Lake Urmia compared to previous years.

He said: “A 1.40-centimeter increase in water level has been recorded, and in some areas the depth of the lakebed has reached 2–2.5 meters.”

Jabbbari noted that the volume of water in Lake Urmia is currently 3.5 billion cubic meters, which represents a 6–7 fold increase compared to previous years.

He also stated that around 70–80 centimeters of water typically evaporates from the lake during the summer due to heat. However, even if 50% of the water evaporates this year, a complete drying of the lake is not expected.

Nevertheless, several experts have urged caution regarding this optimistic assessment. They warn that the apparent improvement should not mislead the public, and that without structural reforms, the situation could deteriorate rapidly again.

They emphasized key priorities such as strict control of water use, preventing illegal and excessive groundwater extraction, ensuring environmental water allocations, reforming agricultural practices, and establishing an integrated monitoring system.
