Another 2,000 People Lose Their Jobs in East Azerbaijan

Over the past few weeks, another 2,000 workers employed in production sectors in East Azerbaijan Province have lost their jobs.

This was announced by the province’s governor, Bahram Sarmast.

He said the layoffs were caused by the war and warned that even more workers could face unemployment in the near future.

Sarmast called on relevant government institutions to pay special attention to the rights and livelihoods of workers affected by the conflict.

However, according to labor movement activists, the real number of people who have lost their jobs is several times higher than the figure provided by the governor.

In particular, due to internet shutdowns, tens of thousands of people involved in online business and digital commerce in East Azerbaijan — as in other regions — have reportedly become unemployed.
