Reuters reported on Tuesday, citing two senior Iranian sources, that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has ordered that the country’s near-weapons-grade enriched uranium not be sent abroad.
“The Supreme Leader’s directive, and the consensus within the establishment, is that the stockpile of enriched uranium should not leave the country,” one of the sources said.
According to the sources, Iranian officials believe that sending the material abroad would make Iran more vulnerable to potential US or Israeli attacks.
Iran had previously indicated it was willing to send half of its 60% enriched uranium stockpile abroad. However, according to Reuters, the regime changed its position, citing threats of an attack on Iran..
One source said there are still “possible formulas” to resolve the issue, including diluting the stockpile under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
