Iran on the brink of a severe wave of poverty; dark outlook for the economy

40 million people are below the poverty line; even if the war ends, the crisis will not be over, and a new wave of poverty is coming in Iran.

At a time when economic pressure on citizens in Iran is increasing, several economists have issued serious warnings about the deepening of the country’s livelihood crisis and the expansion of poverty, painting a worrying picture for the coming years.

Iranian economist Masoud Nili has pointed to the sharp rise in prices, stating that even if the war ends, Iran’s economy will not easily return to normal conditions. He said that according to figures released by the Statistical Center of Iran, inflation in some goods has reached 100 percent.

Hojjat Mirzayi also provided a forecast for the economic situation in 2026, saying that Iran’s economic growth could range between minus 8.8 percent and minus 10 percent.

He said: “Even minus 10 percent economic growth could be considered an optimistic estimate, given the decline in oil exports.”

Mirzayi also warned that poverty in Iran would deepen further, stating that if the effects of the war continue, an additional 3.5 to 4.5 million people will fall below the poverty line.

According to him, in such a scenario, the number of people living below the poverty line would exceed 40 million, highlighting the scale of Iran’s social and economic crisis.

Economists warn that declining oil revenues, uncontrolled inflation, and increasing financial pressure on households are placing millions of lives at serious risk.
