Qazvin-based Azerbaijani activist Suri Babayi Chagheni sentenced to 3 years in prison

Suri Babayi Chagheni, an activist from Qazvin who was among those detained during the January protests, has been sentenced to 3 years in prison.

This was reported by her husband. According to him, Branch 2 of the Qazvin Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Davoud Tashakkori, sentenced Suri Babayi Chagheni to 3 years in prison.

According to the information, Chagheni was convicted on charges of “insulting the Leader” and “propaganda against the system.” In addition to the prison sentence, she has been ordered to have her mobile phone and SIM card confiscated, as well as being banned from leaving the country for 2 years.

Suri Babayi Chagheni is a women’s rights and civil activist. She lives in Qazvin and is known as a critic of mandatory hijab policies. The mother of three children, she has been active in campaigns opposing compulsory hijab.

She had previously been arrested and imprisoned several times during the 2022 protests.
