Restore Tabriz’s historic place names, says City Council member

The historic names of neighborhoods and places that reflect the identity of Tabriz should be restored, according to Rasoul Bargi, a member of the Tabriz City Council.

“For example, the historic Davachi neighborhood has been renamed Shams Tabrizi in official records, while Gümüşqaya has been changed to Dameshghiyeh. However, local people still use the original historic names. That is why restoring these authentic and ancient names is essential,” he said.

Addressing the relevant government authorities, Bargi urged them to follow the example of the Urmia City Council in restoring historic place names.

“Under a decision by the Urmia City Council, several neighborhoods whose names had previously been changed—including Doshakhana, Darvishlar, Demirchilar, Shir-Shira, and others—have had their original historic names restored. This represents the preservation and revival of the city's historical identity. The same approach should be adopted in Tabriz to protect the city's identity,” he said.
