Babai had previously been beaten by officers of the Tabriz Intelligence Department and was placed in solitary confinement for defending the rights of political prisoners and protesting the treatment of inmates by prison officials.

During his time in solitary confinement, he was also denied the right to use the telephone or communicate with his family.

According to reports, the Tabriz Intelligence Department and other security agencies have subjected Ali Babai and his family to continuous psychological and emotional pressure in recent months. The political prisoner has repeatedly faced restrictions and security-related pressure for supporting the rights of other prisoners.

Ali Babai has been imprisoned in Tabriz Central Prison for several months. He previously took part in a hunger strike alongside around 60 political prisoners in protest against the transfer of Yurush Mehralibeyli to the prison's special ward. In addition to his previous case, he is now facing a new charge of "propaganda against the system."
