Official: Around 30% of Iran's Gold Is Produced in West Azerbaijan

Sakhavat Kheirkhah, head of the Industry, Mine and Trade Organization of Iran's West Azerbaijan Province, said that around 30% of the country's gold production comes from the province, adding that this capacity could play an important role in increasing Iran's gross domestic product (GDP).

Speaking at an event on Friday, Kheirkhah said that agriculture accounts for 17% of the province's economy, while industry makes up 25%. Therefore, he argued, West Azerbaijan should be regarded as an industrial province and describing it solely as an agricultural region is misleading.

Kheirkhah also announced that licenses had been issued for 40 new mines in the province. According to him, four discovery certificates and 13 exploration licenses have been granted during this period, and three major gold mining projects are expected to begin operations in the near future.

At the same time, the report notes that the Azerbaijani population does not benefit from the revenues generated by these vast mineral resources. According to official government statistics, West Azerbaijan remains one of Iran's least developed provinces.

The state-run newspaper Hamshahri, citing data from the Statistical Center of Iran, previously published provincial rankings based on inflation, unemployment, and the misery index. According to those figures, West Azerbaijan recorded the country's worst levels of unemployment and economic hardship.
