Baghdad Moves to Disarm Iran-Backed Armed Groups

The Iraqi government has given Iran-aligned armed groups until September 30 to hand over their weapons to the state.

The announcement was made by Iraqi government spokesperson Haider al-Aboudi.

He said all armed groups had been officially notified of the deadline and warned that, after that date, any armed force operating outside government control would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The decision coincides with the planned withdrawal of the US-led international coalition from Iraq and is aimed at ending the activities of armed groups operating outside the authority of the Iraqi government.

Several factions, including Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq and Kata'ib Imam Ali, have agreed to hand over their military structures to the government.

However, groups such as Kata'ib Hezbollah, Kata'ib Sayyid al-Shuhada, and Harakat al-Nujaba have rejected the decision. Kata'ib Hezbollah declared that it would not surrender "even a single bullet."

Analysts say that integrating these groups into Iraq's formal state structure could alter the balance of power between Baghdad, Washington, and Tehran.
