Iranian MP says potential US strike could prompt shift toward nuclear deterrence

An Iranian lawmaker said on Wednesday that a potential US attack on Iran's nuclear facilities could justify revising the country's nuclear doctrine, echoing arguments made by hardline figures who believe Tehran should develop nuclear weapons as a deterrent.

MP Ebrahim Rezaei wrote on X:

“A possible US attack on nuclear facilities is sufficient reason to change the nuclear doctrine.”

He also included the hashtags #ChangeTheNuclearDoctrine and #NuclearDeterrence.

Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is intended exclusively for peaceful purposes and that it has no intention of acquiring nuclear weapons. However, calls from some hardline politicians to alter the country's nuclear doctrine are widely interpreted as support for pursuing a nuclear deterrent capability.

Rezaei's comments came shortly after he was removed from his position as spokesperson for the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee during the committee's annual leadership elections.
