Iranian lawmaker claims Tehran trained Afghan and Iraqi forces to fight US troops after 9/11

An Iranian lawmaker and former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that Iran provided training to Afghan fighters and Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) to confront US forces following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Esmail Kowsari said Tehran's support played a role in the eventual US withdrawal from Afghanistan and helped force American troops in Iraq to reduce their presence to a limited number of military bases.

Referring to the US-led invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, Kowsari said:

“After the attacks on New York’s Twin Towers, the Americans entered Afghanistan and later Iraq with the intention of targeting us. We dealt them a severe blow. We trained both Afghan fighters and Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces on how to confront US troops.”

He also argued that the United States would avoid sending ground forces directly against Iran and would instead seek to pressure Tehran through what he described as “an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.”
