Azerbaijani teacher from Ardabil dismissed over social media activity

Iran's Coordinating Council of Teachers' Trade Associations has reported that Mojtaba Amiri, a contract teacher employed by the Ardabil Department of Education, has been dismissed after being deemed ineligible to continue teaching, despite having completed the required administrative and screening procedures.

According to the council, the Azerbaijani teacher from Ardabil had already been suspended from his position a year ago due to what authorities described as his Instagram activity.

The Ministry of Education's Selection Committee later ruled that Amiri no longer met the general qualifications required to serve as a teacher. The decision resulted in the termination of his employment with the ministry.

The report states that Amiri's activity on social media, particularly content he posted on Instagram, was cited as one of the main reasons behind the committee's decision. His appeal against the ruling was ultimately rejected.

The Coordinating Council of Teachers' Associations condemned the dismissal, arguing that firing teachers for engaging in peaceful activity on social media and expressing their views violates the principles of freedom of expression, job security for teachers, and the right to participate in civil society activities.

The council also called for the annulment of decisions based on political and ideological restrictions, a review of the cases of all dismissed teachers and their reinstatement, and an end to security-driven measures targeting teachers and trade union activists.
