South Azerbaijani Turkic political activist Yurush Mehralibeyli sentenced to additional 3 years and 7 months in prison

South Azerbaijani Turkic political activist Yurush Mehralibeyli, who is currently serving a prison sentence in Tabriz Central Prison, has been sentenced to an additional 3 years and 7 months in a new case.

According to published reports, the new case includes charges of "inciting people to war" and "calling for street protests against the Islamic Republic." The court sentenced him to 7 months and 16 days in prison on the charge of "propaganda against the regime" and 3 years and 1 day on the charge of "inciting people to protest and encouraging war and killing."

Mehralibeyli was arrested by Iranian security forces in Tabriz on 5 January 2026. Following his arrest, he spent more than three months in solitary confinement at the detention facility of the Tabriz Intelligence Department, where he was interrogated before being transferred to Tabriz Central Prison.

Since his transfer, he has reportedly been held in a special ward of the prison.

Mehralibeyli had previously been sentenced in the so-called "Democrats" case by the Tabriz Revolutionary Court to a total of 9 years and 9 months in prison on charges of "forming the Democrats group" and "assembly and collusion against national security."

With the latest ruling, Yurush Mehralibeyli's total prison sentence has increased to 13 years and 4 months.
