A senior Iranian lawmaker said on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz "belongs to Iran" and "will remain Iranian" as parliament reviews draft legislation on Iran's management of the strategically important waterway.
Ali Nikzad, Deputy Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, said the strait "will not return to its previous situation" and that Iran would not relinquish what he described as its rights over the waterway, according to remarks carried by Iranian state media.
Nikzad said the draft legislation had been submitted by lawmakers along with several parliamentary committees, adding that the proposal had received the support of all members of parliament.
He did not provide details about the specific measures included in the bill or explain how Iran's management of the Strait of Hormuz would change if the legislation is approved.
