Shaghayegh Afshar Najafi, an 18-year-old Azerbaijani photographer and student from Qazvin, has been sentenced to nine years in prison by Branch Two of the Qazvin Revolutionary Court.
In addition, she has been banned from leaving Iran for two years, ordered to perform six months of unpaid community service for the Qazvin Municipality, and permanently barred from holding public and government positions.
The court also ordered the confiscation of her mobile phone, telephone line and laptop in favor of the state.
Under Iran’s rules on the consolidation of sentences, only the five-year prison term will be enforceable, with time previously spent in detention to be deducted from the sentence.
Najafi was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of “assembly and collusion against national security,” three years for “cooperation with hostile governments,” and one year for “propaganda against the regime.” The latter charge was linked to alleged activities against national security on social media and support for Israel through the transmission of images and video files to foreign-based media outlets.
A report by the IRGC Intelligence Organization and her alleged participation in the Dey protests were cited by the court as evidence supporting the conviction.
The student was arrested at her home by Iranian security forces on February 14, 2026. She was initially taken to a detention facility operated by the Intelligence Ministry and transferred the following day to Choubinder Prison in Qazvin.
