IRGC Quds Force Commander Esmail Qaani has reportedly urged Iran-aligned Iraqi armed factions not to surrender their weapons during a visit to Baghdad, Al Hadath reported on Thursday, citing unnamed sources.
According to the report, Qaani criticized factions that had agreed to hand over their arms, claiming that weapons already transferred to the Iraqi government were in fact owned by Iran.
He also reportedly told Iraqi political leaders that the armed factions could be used as leverage against Washington. Qaani allegedly argued that the Iraqi government would be unable to prevail in any confrontation with the Iran-backed groups.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has instructed security forces to prepare for possible action if the factions refuse to disarm, Al Hadath reported.
Qaani ended his Baghdad visit after meeting with leaders of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces, Iran-aligned armed factions and the Coordination Framework, according to the report.
