“School in the Turkish language should be for everyone” chant heard at Tabriz’s Sahand Stadium, censored on TV broadcast

During the match between Tractor Azerbaijan and Peykan Tehran at Sahand Stadium in Tabriz, fans chanted “School in the Turkish language should be for everyone” in the 15th minute, calling for the right to education in the Turkish (Azerbaijani) language.

According to videos released from the stadium and the live broadcast of Sahand TV, at the same time as the chant was being heard, the actual sound from the stands was removed from the television broadcast and replaced with another audio track. The move has been criticized as censorship of Tractor fans’ identity-related chants.

After footage recorded inside the stadium was released, the fans’ chant was widely reposted on social media. Azerbaijani users described the incident as another example of state media attempting to remove language-related demands from broadcasts of Tractor matches.

The demand for education in the mother tongue has been reflected in Tractor fans’ chants at Sahand Stadium for years. The stands supporting the team have repeatedly become a platform for expressing the cultural and identity-related demands of the Turks of South Azerbaijan.
