To His Excellency Volodymyr Zelenskyy,
President of Ukraine

Your Excellency,

On behalf of South Azerbaijani activists, I address you with deep respect and solidarity. We closely follow the determined and courageous resistance demonstrated by the people of Ukraine.

Ukraine’s struggle is not merely a defense of sovereignty; it is also a principled stand for dignity, national identity, and a people’s right to determine its own future. During this difficult period, your leadership has become a source of inspiration for everyone who values freedom and justice.

We firmly condemn the ongoing aggression against Ukraine and the atrocities committed against its people. The targeting of civilians, destruction of cities, and attempts to erase national identity constitute serious violations of international law and grave attacks against humanity. Such actions must be openly and collectively rejected by the international community.

By way of brief background, Iran is a multinational state home to millions of Azerbaijanis. The term “South Azerbaijan” refers to the historical Azerbaijani lands that were divided between the Russian and Iranian empires in the 19th century. Despite longstanding cultural and linguistic restrictions, Azerbaijanis living in Iran continue to preserve their national identity.

This historical experience creates a strong sense of empathy with the people of Ukraine. While Ukraine faces aggression rooted in Russian chauvinism, we too have experienced systematic discrimination as a result of policies shaped by Persian chauvinism. Our language, culture, and national identity have often been marginalized.

We believe that it is no coincidence that states that suppress different peoples within their own borders may also adopt similar positions abroad. The cooperation between the Russian and Iranian governments, in some respects, reflects similar approaches to centralized rule and the suppression of non-dominant national groups.

Despite all these challenges, we remain committed to peaceful struggle and to universal principles such as human dignity, equality, and justice. In this spirit, we express our sincere solidarity with Ukraine and its people.

Please accept our best wishes for Ukraine’s continued strength and sovereignty, and for a just and lasting peace.

Slava Ukraini!

Respectfully,
Ramin Atila
