WSJ: Iran Used 60-Day Agreement to Prepare for a Broader War

Iranian leaders reportedly spent the two months following a June memorandum of understanding with the United States preparing for a wider conflict rather than pursuing de-escalation, according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited Iranian and Arab officials.

The report says hardline figures in Tehran viewed the agreement as potentially aimed at reducing economic pressure while giving Washington and Israel time to prepare for another strike.

As the conflict spread beyond the Arabian Gulf, Iran reportedly coordinated more closely with allied armed groups in Yemen, Iraq and Lebanon.

According to the Journal, Iran has also been rapidly repairing damaged military infrastructure and restoring access to missile facilities, at a pace that Israeli officials reportedly did not anticipate. Tehran has meanwhile maintained enough military capability to pose a threat to US forces, commercial shipping and energy infrastructure across the Arabian Gulf.

The report comes as the 60-day memorandum expires, with negotiations stalled and neither Tehran nor Washington showing clear signs of softening their positions.
