Azerbaijan has filed a defamation lawsuit against CNN over a June 5 report alleging that Israel deployed elite military and intelligence personnel to Azerbaijani territory during the war with Iran, Politico reported.
The case, filed in a US federal court, accuses CNN of falsely claiming that Israeli forces used Azerbaijan as a base for military and intelligence activities targeting Iran. Baku is seeking financial damages and a formal retraction.
CNN’s report, based on four unnamed sources, claimed that Israel had deployed dozens of personnel—including special forces and Mossad operatives—to areas near Azerbaijan’s border with Iran. Azerbaijani authorities rejected the allegations and denied permitting its territory to be used for such operations.
According to the lawsuit, Azerbaijani officials approached CNN before taking legal action and requested that the report be withdrawn. The network reportedly refused, maintaining that it stood by its reporting.
