Russia is sending drones, missiles and components for explosives to the Iranian government to help replenish weapons stocks that have been severely depleted during the war.
NBC reported this, citing Western officials.
According to NBC, citing documents and statements from a Western official, dozens of Russian vessels under US and European sanctions have sailed from the Caspian Sea to Amirabad port, located north of Behshahr in Iran’s Mazandaran Province, to deliver military equipment.
Former CIA analyst Jim Lemmon told the network that the process signals the deepening alignment between Moscow and Tehran, while also indicating that US and Israeli strikes on Iran’s weapons-production facilities have been largely successful.
“The procurement of drone components and small-arms ammunition from Russia indicates that Israeli and American attacks on Iranian facilities producing this equipment have weakened Iran’s domestic capabilities,” he said.
The Russian vessels currently carrying military cargo are reportedly operated by MG-FLOT, a shipping company that was targeted by Western sanctions in 2024.
Russia has previously been accused of supporting Iran’s war effort and supplying the Islamic Republic with upgraded drones to strengthen Tehran’s ability to attack US targets.
