Iranian military spokesman labels foreign Persian-language media “military targets”

Abolfazl Shekarchi, spokesperson for Iran’s Armed Forces, has described Persian-language media outlets based outside Iran as “the enemy,” warning that people working for them could potentially be added to the regime’s list of military targets.

Speaking on August 26 at an event marking the launch of the foreign-language pages of Defa Press, Shekarchi claimed, without providing evidence, that overseas Persian-language media organizations have direct links to Mossad, the CIA and intelligence services of hostile countries. He accused them of receiving “operational instructions and logistical support” from those agencies.

Iranian military and security officials have previously accused Persian-language media based abroad of cooperating with foreign governments and intelligence agencies, while issuing threats against journalists working for those organizations.

In recent months, Iran’s judiciary has also extensively confiscated assets belonging to family members of Iranian journalists living abroad.
