Iran blames US sanctions as dollar climbs to 2.1 million rials

Iranian authorities have attributed the sharp rise in the dollar’s value — reaching 2.1 million rials — to US sanctions and acknowledged the growing economic strain on the country.

“The dollar reaching 2.1 million rials is a consequence of US pressure and sanctions, and we do not deny this pressure,” government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said on Tuesday.

She added that the economic difficulties facing Iran stem from sanctions imposed by Washington “under pressure from Israel.”

Mohajerani also said the government has developed measures to ensure fuel supplies for power plants and strengthen the resilience of the country’s natural gas network.
