UN Security Council President: Iranians Are Victims of Their Authorities’ Decisions

Iranian citizens have suffered from decisions made by their own authorities, as well as repeated waves of mass repression, France’s UN ambassador and current president of the UN Security Council, Jérôme Bonnafont, said.

Speaking to reporters, Bonnafont said that Iran’s nuclear activities would remain a key issue for the Security Council this month. He said members would examine Iran’s failure to meet its nuclear commitments and the consequences resulting from that noncompliance.

He added that discussions on Iran would take place amid continuing tensions in the Persian Gulf and restrictions on maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Bonnafont, full freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway has yet to be restored. He warned that the disruption was having “extremely adverse consequences” for developing economies and global food security.

The Security Council is also expected to review the sanctions committee related to Iran’s nuclear program and vote on extending the mandate of a panel of experts overseeing sanctions that were reimposed in September 2025.
