Senior officials in the U.S. administration are expected to discuss the possibility of expanding military operations against Iran following the November 3 midterm elections.
Reuters reported this, citing four sources familiar with the internal discussions.
According to the sources, no decision has yet been made on whether the United States will return to a large-scale war against Iran. However, close advisers to U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly want to keep the conflict as limited as possible until the midterm elections. The aim is to help Republicans preserve their narrow majority in Congress.
One White House official told Reuters: “We continue to put pressure on Iran. But November is more important to us.”
Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are also among the senior officials who support keeping the conflict at a relatively low level until November.
According to the sources, Washington is currently focused primarily on increasing economic pressure on Iran through sanctions and a naval blockade. The objective is to secure concessions from Tehran in future negotiations that months of military operations have failed to achieve.
