Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani has warned that Iran’s ability to withstand pressure from the United States will depend not only on external resistance but also on tackling deep-rooted problems at home.
Zakani, a conservative political figure, said Iran faced three possible paths: making concessions to reach an agreement with Washington, maintaining resistance while failing to address its internal demands, or pairing resistance with domestic reform.
“Resistance does not mean turning a blind eye to internal problems,” Zakani said, according to the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency. “While confronting the enemy, we must also reform the country from within and work to build national strength.”
He said unresolved domestic problems could leave Iran lagging in global competition “even without enemy intervention” and eventually cause the country to “erode from within.”
Zakani acknowledged difficulties affecting Iran’s economy, political system, society and culture. He pointed to inflation, the weakening of the national currency and sharp fluctuations in exchange rates.
