In an analytical report, The Economist wrote that Iran’s influence over its proxy groups in the Middle East has been weakening.
The magazine examined the situation of Lebanese Hezbollah, the Houthis in Yemen, Shiite armed groups in Iraq, and Hamas, stating that these groups have become more distant from Tehran compared with previous years.
The Economist pointed to the weakening of Hezbollah following the killing of Hassan Nasrallah and several of its commanders, growing disagreements between some Iraqi groups and Tehran, and the Houthis’ increasing emphasis on their independence. The magazine said these developments indicate a decline in Iran’s influence over the so-called “Axis of Resistance.”
The magazine also reported that the decline in Iran’s financial capabilities and resources is making it more difficult for Tehran to rebuild its proxy network in its previous form.
The Economist compared the current situation to the final years of the Soviet Union. According to the magazine, Moscow’s declining financial and political support for its satellite states eventually contributed to their gradual distancing from the Soviet Union.
