Trump Advisers Warn Iran War Could Extend Through 2029, WSJ Reports

Senior White House officials have privately warned US President Donald Trump that the war with Iran could potentially continue until the end of his current term, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials.

Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and other senior advisers have reportedly discussed the possibility that Tehran could continue resisting US pressure despite the blockade and ongoing military measures. Such a scenario could extend the conflict beyond January 2029, when Trump’s term is scheduled to end.

The private assessments stand in contrast to Trump’s public remarks on Wednesday, when he said the war would end “immediately” after the November midterm elections, arguing that Iran “can’t hold out any longer.”

According to the Journal, a prolonged conflict could place additional pressure on US military resources and cause sustained disruption in global oil markets. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has already extended some US military deployments in the Middle East into 2027, while the Pentagon plans to maintain certain air-defense units in the region without setting a specific withdrawal date.

The report also said Trump has backed a longer-term campaign of economic pressure, including a naval blockade and sanctions intended to force Tehran to dismantle its nuclear program.
