Anthropic: Iran-linked accounts used Claude in IRGC influence campaigns

Anthropic said Thursday that it had identified and banned three accounts linked to Iranian state propaganda institutions that used Claude to support influence operations.

According to the company, the accounts helped present government-backed messaging as independent material and distribute it through platforms and channels sympathetic to Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) narratives.

Anthropic linked the accounts to Iran’s Islamic Culture and Communications Organization, operating under the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance; the Islamic Propaganda Office of Khorasan Razavi; and the Bina Cultural Observatory of the Islamic Propaganda Organization. The activity described in the report took place from December 2025 through August 2026.

The company said the accounts used Claude to develop campaign strategies, ideological manuals, online personas and databases of targets. They also used the AI model to transform official Iranian intelligence bulletins into multilingual content while obscuring their government origins.

The resulting material was distributed across X, Instagram, Telegram and TikTok, as well as Iranian platforms including Eitaa, Bale and Rubika. Some of the content was subsequently circulated through IRGC-aligned channels on Eitaa and other platforms, Anthropic said.
