WSJ: US ties Chinese satellite imagery to deadly Iran-linked strike

Iran received high-resolution satellite images from Chinese sources before a July 17 attack in Jordan that killed three US service members, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday, citing US officials familiar with the matter.

According to the officials, US authorities have connected the satellite imagery to the attack, describing the finding as the strongest evidence so far that Chinese assistance to Iran during the conflict had deadly consequences for American forces.

The officials did not disclose which Chinese entities provided the imagery and stressed that they were not accusing the Chinese government of directly participating in the attack. They said Iran obtained satellite imagery both before and after the strike.

US officials reportedly raised the issue with their Chinese counterparts. Beijing rejected the allegations and demanded evidence to support Washington’s claims, according to the Journal.

The findings could further strain US-China relations as President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping prepare for a planned summit, The Wall Street Journal reported.
