IAEA says nuclear inspections in Iran have largely halted

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says it has carried out virtually no on-site verification work in Iran for more than six months, apart from a single inspection at the Bushehr nuclear power plant in June.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said Monday that the agency withdrew its inspectors after renewed attacks on Iran in late February, further limiting international oversight of the country’s nuclear activities.

Grossi also warned that the IAEA has been unable for more than a year to maintain a continuous understanding of Iran’s previously declared uranium stocks, including low-enriched and highly enriched uranium containing material enriched to 60%. Some of the affected nuclear facilities were targeted in attacks in June 2025.

He said the agency’s inability to account for the nuclear material or gain access to the relevant facilities represents a serious proliferation concern and requires urgent action.

Grossi called for a return to diplomatic engagement and negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, stressing that the IAEA is prepared to assist in efforts to restore monitoring and verification.
