Iran’s Economic Crisis Drives More Afghans Back to Taliban-Controlled Afghanistan

Thousands of Afghans are leaving Iran as soaring prices, shrinking job opportunities and the collapse of the rial make life increasingly unaffordable, Reuters reported.

Iran’s consumer prices have jumped nearly 90% in a year, while food inflation is approaching 130%. Only 29% of recently returned Afghans had any savings left, while average incomes had fallen by almost one-third.

More than 2 million Afghans have left Iran over the past two years. Now, growing numbers of women and entire families are reportedly returning voluntarily through the Islam Qala border.

A senior Taliban official said 20–40 families are crossing back each day, with many workers saying their wages are no longer enough to cover basic expenses.

For women and girls, the return comes with another reality: Taliban restrictions on education, employment and travel.

For some families, however, staying in Iran has become economically impossible.
