Turkey has withdrawn the operating license of Bank Mellat’s Istanbul branch, ending more than four decades of banking operations in the country.

The decision was published in Turkey’s Official Gazette, which said the license of Bank Mellat’s Istanbul Central Branch, headquartered in Tehran, had been revoked.

According to Reuters, the move was made under Turkish banking regulations that allow authorities to cancel a bank’s license if its continued operation is considered a threat to depositors’ rights or the safety and stability of the financial system.

The notice did not link the decision to US sanctions or identify any specific problems with the bank’s operations.

The move comes amid growing pressure on financial institutions and companies accused of maintaining ties with Iran. Earlier this month, the US Treasury sanctioned Turkish investment bank Golden Global and two of its subsidiaries over alleged connections to Iran.
