Iranian hardline paper calls for continued hijab enforcement during war

Iran’s hardline Kayhan newspaper has argued that the country should continue enforcing its mandatory hijab rules despite the ongoing wartime situation.

The paper said the war should not be used as a reason to suspend policies aimed at preserving what it described as Iran’s social and religious identity. It also pointed to the Quranic revelation concerning hijab, claiming that it occurred during a period of war.

Earlier this month, Expediency Council member Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel said authorities were limiting enforcement of the mandatory hijab partly because of the “war conditions.”

Kayhan, which operates under the supervision of the Supreme Leader’s representative, warned against what it described as growing public defiance of compulsory hijab rules. The paper argued that tolerating violations of one rule could encourage the normalization of further violations.

The comments come as increasing numbers of Iranian women continue to appear in public without the mandatory headscarf.
