Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has come under criticism from some Iranian officials over his decision to travel to New York for the UN General Assembly.
Parliamentarian Mojtaba Yousefi argued that Pezeshkian could have skipped the gathering as a way to protest what he called US aggression and Washington’s failure to honor its commitments.
Yousefi also questioned the UN’s credibility, accusing the organization of failing to condemn what he described as war crimes during the recent conflict.
Former senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Hossein Kanani-Moghadam took a more cautious view, saying the General Assembly could provide Pezeshkian with a valuable diplomatic platform. Nevertheless, he said: “If I were Pezeshkian, I would not go to New York.”
Kanani-Moghadam said the Iranian president could use his UN speech to outline Tehran’s version of events surrounding the recent war and meet foreign leaders to discuss Iran’s diplomatic and economic concerns.
