Around 80 countries have condemned the actions of Iran and the Houthis in the Middle East and called for the immediate restoration of commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The call was made in a joint statement read by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani during his address to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
According to the statement, the actions are undermining international trade and energy security.
“Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to pose a threat to international security, as well as the rights and freedoms of shipowners. We also strongly condemn the Houthis’ decision to resume the conflict in Yemen, their continued strikes against Saudi Arabia, and their reckless attacks in the Red Sea,” Al Zayani said.
The signatories include Arab Gulf states and major Western countries.
The statement also warned that any further Houthi advance toward the Bab el-Mandeb Strait would increase risks to international shipping, maritime security and global trade.
