UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Khalifa Shaheen Almarar made the remarks during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
He stressed that Abu Dhabi has always sought a peaceful resolution to the dispute and proposed two options: “direct negotiations or referral to the International Court of Justice.”
The minister said his country’s approach is based on de-escalation, dialogue, respect for the sovereignty of states and good-neighbourly relations, while rejecting the unlawful use of force or threats of force.
Nasser Asadi, an adviser to Iran’s mission to the United Nations, rejected Abu Dhabi’s claims in response, describing the three islands as an integral part of Iranian territory.
Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa came under Iranian control in 1971, during the rule of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The UAE maintains its claim to sovereignty over the islands, while Iran also claims them. Their location near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz and major shipping routes has given the decades-old dispute strategic significance.
