The Special Rapporteur made the remarks in a report published on October 1.
Addressing the situation of Turks, Kurds, Baluchis, Arabs and Turkmens, Sato spoke about discrimination in language, economic and social spheres, as well as restrictions on access to certain public services.
Sato expressed concern over the numerous obstacles faced by ethnic and religious minorities in Iran in accessing fair trials, particularly in cases that carry the death penalty.
According to the Special Rapporteur, discrimination against minorities can be observed at various stages of the justice system, from arrest and interrogation to trial and the imposition of death sentences.
Among other concerns, she highlighted the lack of adequate interpreters, the use of torture to obtain confessions, and the prosecution of individuals in security-related cases without adequate access to legal counsel.
