Iran must significantly reduce its uranium enrichment capabilities to end the war with the United States, U.S. Vice President JD Vance said in an interview with Reuters.
“If you don’t want a nuclear weapon, then why are you enriching uranium to 60 percent? If you want to demonstrate your commitment to giving up the pursuit of a nuclear weapon, then don’t produce highly enriched fuel. This is a very important and fundamental issue for bringing the conflict to an end,” Vance said.
He said Iran must take significant steps regarding its uranium enrichment capabilities to demonstrate its commitment to abandoning the pursuit of nuclear weapons.
According to Vance, the United States remains open to reaching an agreement, but Washington will demand concrete concessions from Tehran regarding its nuclear program.
“We are not going to substitute words for actions,” the vice president said.
Vance added that one factor complicating the situation is Washington’s uncertainty over who ultimately makes decisions in Tehran. He said the United States is holding talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, but it remains unclear how much influence they wield within Iran’s power structure.
“One of the things we are paying attention to is that it is not entirely clear how decisions are made in their country,” Vance said.
