The Pentagon has directed U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) to finalize plans for a possible return to large-scale military operations against Iran, Axios reported Wednesday, citing U.S. officials.
According to the report, the order was issued several days ago but did not specify when any strikes would begin. President Donald Trump has yet to make a final decision on whether to resume major combat operations.
U.S. and Israeli officials told Axios that a new military campaign could begin before the U.S. midterm elections and possibly even ahead of Israel’s elections, which are scheduled for the previous week.
If Washington decides to restart major operations, the campaign could involve extensive strikes against Iranian energy facilities, critical infrastructure and nuclear-related sites, the report said.
“The Department's job is to develop and present military options to the President,” a Pentagon official told Axios.
Trump’s national security team held a several-hour meeting at Camp David on Friday. An Israeli official told Axios that part of the discussions focused on the possibility of renewed large-scale military action against Iran.
Meanwhile, negotiations between Washington and Tehran have reportedly stalled. Qatari mediators are still waiting for Iran’s response to a U.S. counterproposal that calls for concessions on its nuclear program.
