Zahedan Governor Jamshid Rakhshani-Nasab said a vehicle belonging to a police commando unit was attacked in the Nosratabad area. Police personnel reportedly returned fire following the assault.

According to Sistan-Baluchestan police, the patrol was targeted on a main road in the Lakhshak area while conducting a security operation. The officer killed in the incident was identified as Vahid Enayat.

Police said several of the attackers were injured during the exchange of fire and managed to escape. Security forces subsequently launched a search operation in the area to locate those responsible.

Recent attacks in Sistan-Baluchestan

No armed group has so far claimed responsibility for Thursday’s attack.

The incident followed an attack three days earlier in Bampur, where gunmen reportedly targeted two military vehicles. Baloch rights organization Haalvsh said at least three people were killed.

A separate roadside attack near Zahedan last week also resulted in several deaths, although accounts of the incident differed. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that one of its members was killed in a bombing, while Haalvsh reported a higher death toll and said those killed were members of the Iran-backed Fatemiyoun militia.
